CALL FOR PAPERS - September 2012 (Volume 44 No 3)
|
There is increasing recognition that health is conditioned by a range of sociopolitical, environmental, and physiological influences that are intertwined with gender and sex. These intersecting influences contribute to different expressions of health and illness between women and men and also create health inequalities within groups of women or men. Furthermore, there remains occasional blurring of definitional boundaries for the gender/sex dichotomy and, in addition, there are few models that address the simultaneous interplay of both gender and sex in health outcomes. Recently, with the proliferation of women's health clinics and programs, attention has turned to men's health (and research on masculinities). These are matters of great importance to nurses as they confront health disparities across the spectrum of practice and research. For this issue of CJNR we invite discussion of current issues in gender, sex, and health. We welcome reports of completed research integrative literature reviews, and metasyntheses with clear research or clinical implications, as well as essays on conceptual and/or methodological issues/developments/controversies in the field. We are open to contributions on a broad range of topics in this area; examples include gender-based care for a specific chronic disease (e.g., diabetes, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis); gender issues in health promotion/care for marginalized communities (e.g., newcomers, First Nations, those with low income); and relevant theoretical advances on which to base nursing research and programs.

This conference brings together an interdisciplinary group of professionals and policy makers working in the field of childhood and adolescent obesity. For this second focus issue, we invite submissions that increase our understanding of how to promote equity in health and health care involving indigenous people in Canada and in other countries. We are particularly interested in critical analyses of the root causes of health, social, and health-care inequities; strategies for mitigating such inequities; and related research that draws on indigenous epistemologies and decolonizing perspectives. We invite a range of submissions, including manuscripts based on empirical research using quantitative, qualitative, or combined methods; theoretical contributions; and policy analyses.

CALL FOR PAPER - VOLUME 43, No. 4 DECEMBER 2011
|
Today there are 214 million people on the move worldwide and every year Canada receives more than 200,000 migrants, many of whom face a host of inequalities. In a recent report on the state of health care in Canada, the Chief Public Health Officer highlights the need for resources to address issues that have a negative impact on health, including language difficulties, insensitivity on the part of health-care personnel, lack of social support, and time constraints faced by low-income immigrant families. Nurses are in a position to provide outreach to the most isolated and marginalized residents and to work closely with communities. For this issue of CJNR we invite manuscripts on migration and health that look at equity and the provision of high-quality and comprehensive nursing services and that connect research to policy change. The submissions should be completed research reports or integrative literature reviews with research directives Guest Editor: Dr. Anita Gagnon Please submit papers online Using CJNR E-journal Press at http://cjnr.msubmit.net |

CALL FOR PAPERS – MENTAL HEALTH PROMOTION: POPULATION HEALTH PERSPECTIVES
Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health/Revue Canadienne de Santé Mentale Communautaire
An Interdisciplinary Journal/Un Périodique Interdisciplinaire
The Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health (CJCMH) is an interdisciplinary publication devoted to sharing information on the mental well-being of Canadians and their communities. CJCMH invites submissions to a special issue sponsored by the Canadian Population Health Initiative of the Canadian Institute for Health Information. The special issue will be dedicated to mental health promotion from a population health perspective, with particular emphasis on equity and the role of social determinants of health. We hope to elicit papers that explore a variety of research and practice-based perspectives from a range of disciplines, and from health and social care professionals, mental health policy and decision-makers, and academic researchers. Papers may address:
- Links between social factors (such as employment, life balance, or the social environment) and mental well-being
- Risk and protective factors linked to the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of mental health
- Policy initiatives and reforms that improve mental health outcomes, services and access to resources
- Evaluation of systems change interventions
- Innovative strategies and programs addressing issues of equity in mental health promotion
- Mental health promotion programs conducted in community and/or health system settings
- Mental health promotion programs aimed at vulnerable populations
- The challenges of evaluation: how to evaluate, what to evaluate, and indicators related to mental health promotion

Journal of Family Social Work
NOW ACCEPTING PAPERS - Call for manuscripts for special thematic issue "Evidence-Based Social Work Practice with Older Adults and Their Families"
Special Issue on "Evidence-Based Social Work Practice with Older Adults and Their Families." With the exponential increase of the older adult population projected in the near future, greater knowledge on how best to serve older adults and their family members is clearly needed. Furthermore, a significant need exists for professionals to be equipped with particular skills to work with this population. Although social workers are aware of future demographic predictions and the attendant challenges and opportunities, social work students seem reluctant to specialize in working with older adults. The goal of the journal's special edition is to address both needs.
We call for papers that:
- Contain empirical data on family-focused interventions with older persons and their family.
- Evaluate teaching methodologies for family-focused interventions with older persons.

Sutton Place Hotel, Edmonton, Alberta
Pre-conference workshops : October 3, 2011
Conference: October 4-5, 2011
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The Research Data Centre at the University of Alberta invites researchers from any discipline to present their research findings at the Canadian Research Data Centre Network's ninth annual conference on the theme Coming of Age: The Policy Impact of an Aging Population. Proposals for oral presentations, symposia or posters on any issues related to aging, older adults or intergenerational relationships are welcome. Topics include, but are not limited to: social, economic, mental or physical health and well-being; employment; older workers; retirement planning and retirement transitions; family and social networks; grandparenting; special populations such as aboriginal and immigrant seniors; healthy aging; aging well/well-being in later life; aging with mental illness; public health implications of population aging; caregiving; built environments for an aging population; driving and other transportation needs; age-friendly communities. All presentations should address the policy and/or practice implications of the findings.
Preference will be given to papers based on RDC data and research focusing on issues of concern to Canadian decision makers and practitioners, but other empirical or synthesis papers are welcome. While papers need to meet high disciplinary standards, the presentations must be understandable to those outside the presenters' discipline(s) and to decision makers outside of academia. Graduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts, and to take advantage of pre-conference training activities.
Abstracts should specify the type of presentation being proposed (oral presentation, symposium or poster) and include the title, author’(s’) name(s) and affiliaton(s), contact information (mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address) for the presenting author, and 300 to 500 words describing the presentation’s objectives, rationale, methodology, preliminary findings and policy and/or practice implications.
Proposals for symposia should submitted as a package that includes name(s) and contact information for the proposer(s), a brief description (approximately 200 words) of the overall objectives of the symposium and abstracts (see above) for each of 3 to 4 papers to be presented. Symposium organizers are encouraged to identify a moderator and/or discussant for their symposium.
Abstracts should be submitted electronically to Dr. Janet Fast at rdcconf@library.ualberta.ca by April 30, 2011. Authors will be notified about the selection of papers by May 30, 2011.
Questions should be directed to Dianne Kieren, Conference Co-ordinator, at rdcconf@library.ualberta.ca.
